Stephen Ministry

Stephen MinistryWHAT IS STEPHEN MINISTRY?

Our congregation’s Stephen Ministry will equip lay people to provide confidential one-to-one Christian care to individuals in our congregation and community who are experiencing difficulties in their lives.

A Stephen Minister Is . . .

  • A child of God who walks beside a person who is hurting
  • A congregation member with gifts for caregiving, who was carefully selected to serve in this role
  • A lay person who has received 50 hours of training in providing emotional and spiritual care
  • A caring, Christian friend who listens, cares, prays, supports, and encourages
  • Someone who will “be there” for his or her care receiver, meeting faithfully for about an hour each week, for as long as there’s a need

We are beginning to recruit Stephen Ministers for the fall training class.  A Stephen Minister is someone who is trained to walk with another person who is going through a difficult time in life.  It could be due to a loss of a loved one, an illness, a change in life circumstances or someone who just moved here and is struggling to adjust.

We are looking for individuals to commit to 20 weeks of training beginning in September and going through January.  The training will take place on Tuesday evenings from 7-9pm.  If you are interested, please e-mail Jill Van Veen at jvanveen@gracegso.org for an application.
